Trial or no Trial?
So you’ve booked in your hair and makeup artist but you’re not sure if you want or even need to have a hair and makeup trial as well. Well, as with everything wedding-related, there are a few things to consider…
First of all, time. Depending on how early or late you decide to book your makeup artist, you may not have time to fit in a trial. This is also true if you are having a destination wedding in New Zealand and won’t arrive until a few days before the wedding day. In this case, technology is our best friend, and we can have a video call to discuss anything and everything you have in mind for your bridal hair and makeup look.
Another important factor is budget. Let's face it, we all know weddings can be expensive, and the costs can start to add up pretty quickly. If you are conscious of your budget and trying to keep things budget-friendly, then there is absolutely no pressure to have a trial. Again, with the help of our good friend technology, we can have a video call before the wedding day, or I can come a few minutes early on the wedding day itself, and we can discuss what your vision is for your bridal hair and makeup.
Happiest brides are the prettiest!
Are you a big makeup wearer? If you are not, then it is usually a good idea to have a trial, just so you can get used to the idea and feeling of having makeup on your face. When you are not used to having makeup on your face, it can feel a bit weird and overwhelming. Having a trial before the big day lets you get used to the look and feel of the makeup without the nerves or anxiety of the wedding day. It will also give us a chance to see how your skin may react to certain makeup products, and we can then adjust things accordingly for the actual wedding day.
Maybe you’re quite specific with how you like your makeup…This would be another reason why you should have a trial before the wedding day. Again, without any extra stresses of the wedding day and time restraints, your makeup artist can take the time to really understand what you are wanting in a calm and relaxed environment, because if things don’t feel quite right on the wedding day, it can become stressful and fast!
Sensitive or allergies? Absolutely, have a trial because we definitely don’t want any nasty surprises on the wedding day.
Now, if your idea to have a hair and makeup trial is to decide whether or not you actually like a hair and makeup artist, then I hate to say it, but that’s not what a trial is for. A trial is to figure out your hair and makeup look, find out what you are comfortable with, see how your skin feels and work out what changes may need to happen. on the wedding day.
When a bride-to-be comes into a trial with the preconceived notion that this may or may not be the artist for me, then you are kinda already setting yourself up for disappointment, especially if this is the first artist in a list of artists you have booked a trial with. Why? because more often than not, most brides won’t quite know what they want for their bridal hair and makeup, or they may have an idea in their head, seen some photos that they think will look good on them, but when executed, it doesn’t look right…An “it looked better in my head” situation.
Precision Precision Precision!
Attention to detail is key to creating the perfect bridal hair and makeup look.
In these situations, you may feel like the first artist doesn't know what they’re doing, so you move on to the next one. This time, you have some more ideas from the first trial about your likes and dislikes and communicate these to the second artist. She does a great job, but it still doesn’t feel quite right, so you move on to artist number three. Of course, you take your updated ideas and knowledge from artists one and two, and of course, this artist now has it perfect! and not necessarily because she is significantly better than the first two makeup artists, but because she has more knowledge to work with and you have more experience about what to expect when your hair and makeup is done.
So now you know, when to have a trial and when to skip it! and of course if you’re currently searching for a hair and makeup artist for your big day get in contact for a consultation.
