Airbrush Makeup: Is It Right for Me?

Airbrush makeup is nothing new in the makeup world; however, as usual, we Kiwis are usually late to the party! I first learnt about airbrush makeup about 4 years ago, and it piqued my interest, especially for bridal work. I then had a trip planned to LA to attend what is known as “The Makeup Show,” and I had the opportunity to watch and learn all about airbrush makeup from various seasoned bridal artists. I decided to bring back all the necessary equipment to help me get started, and have been slowly encouraging it to my clients ever since

If you’re a bride-to-be and are curious about how airbrush makeup could work for you, here are some pros and cons to think about.

Pro’s

  • Extremely lightweight - if you hate the feeling of makeup on your face, airbrush foundation creates a very thin layer that feels like you’re wearing nothing at all, giving you the ultimate “your skin but better” look.

  • Long-lasting wear - Airbrush makeup is very heat and humidity-resistant, making it perfect for long wedding days, especially in the summer time. The application method also makes it transfer-proof, which is especially useful if you need to cover up any tattoos, scars, or unexpected tan lines.

  • Hygienic - Because there is nothing physically touching your face, it creates a more hygienic makeup application. And if you happen to be sensitive to certain detergents used to clean makeup brushes or fibres that make up brushes can be made from, then with an airbrush makeup application, you don’t need to worry about that.

  • Beautiful on camera - Airbrush makeup gives a soft focus effect to skin, and with no risk of brush marks, the results look stunning on camera.

Con’s

  • Not for all skin types - If you have very dry or textured skin, airbrush makeup can pick up on this and make dry patches look worse. If you have a lot of facial hair or peach fuzz and are not comfortable removing it, the airbrushing process will cling to the hairs rather than your face, making facial hair more noticeable.

  • Can feel drying - Again, if you have particularly dry and dehydrated skin, airbrush foundation could make your skin feel dry and tight, which can be an uncomfortable feeling and not ideal for a wedding day.

  • Special equipment needed - Now, of course, your makeup artist will have all the gear. Still, if something breaks down and there are no replacement parts, the equipment becomes useless. Similarly, a power outage would render the airbrushing equipment useless. In these scenarios, it's always best to have a plan B and be mentally prepared to have your makeup done the traditional way, even if you had your heart set on airbrushing.
