Why I don’t call myself a luxury Hair and makeup artist

The word luxury gets thrown around a lot, especially in the wedding industry, and after a while, I feel like it kinda loses all meaning. As a bridal hair and makeup artist, I don’t use the word luxury to describe my services, and that’s intentional. It doesn’t mean my clients get subpar or “cheap service”; rather, I believe luxury, especially when it comes to price points, is very subjective. And when it comes to having your hair and makeup done, either for your wedding or otherwise, it’s a service that’s nice to have, not necessarily a must-have!

Luxury can mean different things to different people. For some people, it’s a high price point and designer labels; for others, it can simply be the time, care, and pampering you receive when you have your makeup or hair done, and the feeling of someone taking care of you. Personally, I have had clients say my services are really affordable and budget-friendly compared to other hairstylists and makeup artists in the Auckland area, and then I have had other potential clients reach out and say I am too expensive for them, so it really is a matter of personal preference and what you consider to be a luxury.

Luxury isn’t just a word, it’s a feeling!

Day-to-day life can get busy and stressful, and a special event, especially your wedding day, is no exception. Having a hairstylist or makeup artist come and take care of your beauty needs, giving you the time to sit back, relax and have a moment to yourself.

And if you’re a mother of the bride or groom, or any special person in the couple’s life, the run-up to the wedding can be stressful for you as well or just emotional. Sitting back and relaxing, even if you don’t want much makeup or anything extravagant with your hair, lets you enjoy the calm before the wedding celebrations really get started.

Sitting back and enjoying your wedding day with your loved ones is a luxury in itself.

My focus as a hair and makeup artist, whether you are a bride or not, has always been about the experience, never the labels. Making sure my clients, both bridal and non-bridal, feel comfortable, confident and truly like the best version of themselves is my utmost priority.

For me, luxury isn’t just a word, it’s how you feel when you leave the chair.
